(Revised and reposted March 15, 2011)
Before you flee the country in panic,.... let me say this map is not gospel..... Repeat.... It ain't necessarily so.
I apologize for initially spreading this as a "Dooms Day" prediction. What can I say? I'm susceptible to bad info from the internet, just like you.
I have just learned that these "projections" are probably "Bunk". That's right,.... I said "Bunk"... But, I also said.."probably".
According to Snopes, this map, which has circulated the internet, shows projected rates that are closer to nuclear attack levels than the radiation levels projected by the events taking place in Japan.
What you're seeing above is a map of projected radiation exposure should any of the nuclear power plants in Japan melt down. Pretty ominous stuff, isn't it?
But,... according to Snopes..... the truth, is closer to the statement below.
From the N.R.C.
From The California Emergency Management Agency.....
Despite the growing crisis in Japan, health officials said "they were doubtful that harmful radiation would flow 5000 miles to the West Coast."
Scott Jorden, a spokesman for the C.E.M.A. said "Nuclear Experts have reassured officials that there is no danger at this time."
Okay,.... don't pack up and run for cover, yet,.... but, there's a few questions in my mind that just won't shut off.
#1. Who should we trust to give us the straight scoop?
#2. Aren't these the same people that have reassured us from the git-go that "Nuclear Power is safe and clean"?
#3. What else can they say.....???
So,... will we learn anything from this? Like maybe nuclear power isn't really safe. Or, maybe it has the potential to destroy the planet. I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, we don't need this kind of energy. Anything that has the potential to destroy all of us, just isn't worth it.
There are safer, cleaner, more planet friendly ways to get power. If we don't demand our government to seek those ways, we are contributing to our own extinction. It's only a matter of time.
Are you willing to take the risk???
Write or call your representative, now. There's never been a better time, and this "incident" isn't over,... yet.
